VIRTUS (formerly called Shield the Vulnerable) is an online training which is mandatory for all those wishing to work in ministry with children and youth. This process ensures the safety, protection, and care of minors and is an Archdiocesan requirement for anyone interacting with children in the Church, professionally or voluntarily. The “VIRTUS: Protecting God’s Children” training class is required for the following personnel: clergy (priests or deacons) school administrative and educational staff (principals, assistant principals, deans, assistant deans, teachers, teachers’ aides, or guidance counselors, but not business, clerical or custodial staff) Increasing awareness of potentially harmful situations through the VIRTUS Protecting God's Children adult training workshops. Implementing a Diocesan Code of Conduct for Those Working with Minors which outlines acceptable and unacceptable behaviors for all clergy, employees and volunteers. As of Nov. 1, 2017, the Archdiocese of Baltimore joined more than ninety dioceses using VIRTUS as a training and compliance management system.
